Our site is indeed not big and the problem with the changes in between is almost non existing since it is not a real wiki but more of an informative site.
Having a wiki as framework is handy for easy editing :-)

I'll try opening it in the VM and later copy it to the real site.

Once you get to your destination where you can access your Wikidot hosted site, you could list recent changes on the VM site and then open those pages and do a copy/paste from the VM site to your Wikidot hosted site.

The initial setup might be a pain, but once it's done shouldn't be too bad to maintain.

Currently there is no easy way yo do this. The current backup routine will give you a zipped file with all of your pages and files, but there is no restore option to put them back.

Restoring pages is a lot of manual work. It would involve opening the individual page files from the zipped backup, copying the wiki source and then pasting it into the editor box on the other site's matching page.

I went through this process when I moved my "proof of concept" site from Wikidot to my own server at work. It was not fun porting over a 300+ page manual to the new server.

If and when we get a better backup/restore option, what you propose would work pretty well as long as no one else is editing anything in between your backup/restore.

I very cool solution would be to merge based on the date edited and preserve any earlier revisions in the page history.

I posted this question also a month ago on the dev forum, but unfortunately no reaction.

I have an existing wiki (schoolsplay.wikidot.com) that I want to update.
To get to work I take the train, but unfortunately I have no internet connection there (3G is way to expensive!)

I could get the vmimage working, but how can I use an existing wiki in it?
So getting the existing wiki into my machine?
And getting the updated wiki from my machine to wikidot.com?
