I've been running Wikidot 1 on a production server at my office since early this year. I'm interested in updating to the latest revision, but am a bit nervous about taking such a big leap. I do plan on testing an update on my development server first, but wonder if anyone can tell me what issues I might expect to encounter (i.e. changes to Postgresql DB structure, etc.) The version I'm running in production is probably revision 39 or so and I'd like to take the plunge to get up to revision 158 so I can take advantage of all of the improvements in the last few months.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or advice.

-Ed

I have just finished documenting a new method to simplify the Wikidot install process on a home Ubuntu server.

I spent some time learning a little bash scripting and came up with a set of scripts to simplify the install process. I'm sure this all could have been done in a single script, but hey, I'm a rookie with this stuff!

The new howto is here:
The Easier Wikidot Home Network Install

Please give it a test drive if you're so inclined and let me know if you have any problems.

-Ed

It took over a week, but I finally figured it out! I have resolved all of the permissions problems that were driving me crazy and now have what appears to be a fully-functioning Wikidot server running on my home network. Through this process I have learned a lot more than I planned, but it was a great feeling when the final attempt actually worked without errors. Those "A-Ha!" moments are great! ;)

I just posted a how-to: Wikidot Home Network install

The steps documented have been confirmed to work on 3 different PCs. If you can run Ubuntu Server 7.10, the rest should be pretty easy now.

The how-to still needs some follow-up, but it's far enough along that you can get a working Wikidot server going in a couple of hours.

Have fun!
-Ed

As distributed, does the open source version of Wikidot have the same restrictions as Wikidot's hosted site in terms of file space and the number of members a private site can have? Anything else we might consider changing from the default?

If so, where do we edit those settings? I didn't see anything obvious in GlobalProperties.

Thanks,
-Ed

How do I troubleshoot the turing code not displaying? I'm trying to create a non-admin user on my testing server, but the turing code graphic is not displayed - it's just the text "turing code" followed by the field for entering it.

Was an application missed that needs to be installed or does this not work when running the site while on the server?

Update

I figured out how to find the Captcha code by browsing the "ozone-session" table in the PostgreSQL database (after starting the "create account" process) and was able to create an account for a non-admin user.

The other good news is that I am finally able to access my site not only from my internal network, but from the outside world as well!

I'll have to wait for an answer on why the Captcha (turing code) graphic is not rendering properly before getting too excited. But for now, I have a work-around for my own use.

In spite of my trials and tribulations (and some frustration), I'm learning a lot more about Linux and becoming less fearful of it the more I dig into these issues and try to figure them out!

-Ed

Thanks to Michal's help, I have successfully installed Wikidot on a server at home. However, I'm still having problems hitting my Wikidot site from other PCs in my home network. I think it might be some kind of DNS issue. When I run Firefox on the Wikidot server, I can find Wikidot at www.dawiki (no ".com" per Michal's instructions - my server name is "dawiki"). The other PCs on my network can not find it through that URL. If I use the IP address of my server (192.168.0.108), I get the dreaded "The site does not exist." page.

Do I need to change something on the Ubuntu/Wikidot server or change settings on my Windows PCs or is it something else? Once I get this all working, I'll document all the fun I'm having for the rest of you! ;)

-Ed
