It turns out that this is becoming more of a hassle than I thought it would be. I've just spent the last few hours trying to migrate all of my live data from an older revision of Wikidot 1 to a new server with the latest revision (196). It seemed like the tables populated properly, but I'm running into a number of database errors, mostly related to duplicate keys.

The approach I took (and it seemed like it should work well), was to export my live database using PGAdmin3. I then spent a lot of time editing the dump.sql file that is distributed with Wikidot. I simply copied all of the sql COPY commands stdin data from my live data into the corresponding place in the dump.sql file.

I did have to redo things a couple of times because I noticed that the structure of some tables changed (well, at least one table for sure - categories). I'm going to have to spend some more time comparing the table structure before I try this again (unless a Postgresql guru can give me some help!)

I suspect this would be a lot less painful if I was going from one machine to another with the same version of everything on both machines. In my case I've got an old version of Wikidot on psql 8.2 trying to move to the latest revision of Wikidot and psql 8.3.

Stay tuned! I'll be trying again in a couple of days.

-Ed

I ended up updating my live Wikidot 1 install by accident tonight. I thought I was logged into my test server but wasn't - I was still connected to my live server (using webmin for remote access). I did the SVN update and ran the config and generated files before I realized what a rookie mistake I had just made. My heart sunk at the moment I realized what I had done, but I was quickly rejoicing after I realized that everything is still working perfectly! I wasn't too worried if it did fail since I had just backed up my live server, but it was still a sinking feeling when I realized my error.

This is quite a testament to the development team in that this was a leap from a revision number somewhere in the high 30's (I went live last Ferbuary) to the current revision number of 195! The only thing I can find that did not update is the few new themes since I had created some custom themes of my own and the database update rejected the new themes because the records already existed (which is exactly what it should have done - not overwrite any existing records).

I'm still going to perform an OS and Postgresql upgrade and will keep everyone posted.

-Ed

I'm actually going to give this a shot in the next week or so. I'm currently setting up the latest version of Wikidot 1 on an Ubuntu 8.04 server that I will use to replace my live install on an Ubuntu 7 server. I'll also be moving from Postgresql 8.2 to 8.3 in the process.

As long as the server on the Internet is under your control (i.e. you can install all of the required packages, etc.), you should be able to do this. I don't think Wikidot is ready to be uploaded to one of the many web hosts out there (and may never be). I've had some success exporting Postgresql table data from my live machine and importing it into my updated development machine. I've only had slight issues when the base distribution data has some new data in old tables (like the addition of a few new themes to the distribution package recently).

Also, with the progress of updates recently, I wouldn't be surprised if we see full-blown backup/restore capability built into Wikidot soon.

Bottom line is I wouldn't be afraid of populating your local server as long as you can configure the machine that is going to host your site on the 'net.

-Ed

I've been running Wikidot 1 on a production server at my office since early this year. I'm interested in updating to the latest revision, but am a bit nervous about taking such a big leap. I do plan on testing an update on my development server first, but wonder if anyone can tell me what issues I might expect to encounter (i.e. changes to Postgresql DB structure, etc.) The version I'm running in production is probably revision 39 or so and I'd like to take the plunge to get up to revision 158 so I can take advantage of all of the improvements in the last few months.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or advice.

-Ed

I think I can finally say that I have a fully functional install now. After wiping one of my test servers and doing one more clean install, it appears all of the "critical" functionality is now working. This includes my latest issue of file upload/download.

Also, I would highly recommend using the dynamic DNS service, DynDNS if you want to access your server from the outside. See my post in the thread for more details: http://www.wikidot.org/forum/t-38870/installation-clarifications#post-111637

My production server for my work-related Wikidot project will be going live this week.
I have just finished documenting a new method to simplify the Wikidot install process on a home Ubuntu server.

I spent some time learning a little bash scripting and came up with a set of scripts to simplify the install process.
It took over a week, but I finally figured it out! I have resolved all of the permissions problems that were driving me crazy and now have what appears to be a fully-functioning Wikidot server running on my home network. Through this process I have learned a lot more than I planned, but it was a great feeling when the final attempt actually worked without errors. Those "A-Ha!" moments are great! ;)

I just posted a how-to: Wikidot Home Network install

The steps documented have been confirmed to work on 3 different PCs. If you can run Ubuntu Server 7.10, the rest should be pretty easy now.

The how-to still needs some follow-up, but it's far enough along that you can get a working Wikidot server going in a couple of hours.

Have fun!
-Ed

Hi Ed,

You need to instruct your home machines, that *.dawiki is 192.168.0.108. You can do it either by adding a proper line to /etc/hosts (in windows somewhere under c:/windows) or by adding such entries to your DNS server (possibly a router or something like this) or by setting up a fresh DNS server (possibly pdnsd — it reads /etc/hosts of the machine it runs and serves it to all clients that connects to it) and adding the new server to DNS servers used by workstation (/etc/resolv.conf in Unix or Linux).

Hope it helps, if you have some further questions, feel free to ask. I would be grateful if you manage to complete the task and write a complete HOWTO on it.

Hint: pdnsd acts as a proxying/relaying DNS server as well, so you can set any working for you DNS-es to the machine with wikidot. Add some entries do /etc/hosts on it and then use ONLY a wikidot machine (192.168.0.108) as a DNS server (this setting may be set with DHCP) for any machine inside your Home Network.
